National strategy for mental health and suicide prevention
Forte collaborates with 26 other government agencies on the national strategy for mental health and suicide prevention. The goal is to promote good and equitable mental health and reduce the number of suicides. The work is led by the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare. Forte is responsible for strengthening knowledge development in the field together with the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU)
It’s About Life
It’s About Life is the name of Sweden’s national strategy for mental health and suicide prevention. It is based on a framework with a vision of a society that promotes good and equitable mental health across the entire population, and where no one should end up in such a vulnerable situation that suicide is perceived as the only way out. The strategy, which runs from 2025 to 2034, guides efforts at the national, regional and local levels and sets out shared objectives that make it easier to collaborate, prioritise and follow up initiatives over time.
Forte works together with 26 other government agencies to coordinate, support and monitor the implementation of the strategy. The work is led by the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare.
Objective 7: Strengthened knowledge development in mental health and suicide prevention
SBU and Forte coordinate the agencies’ work on Objective 7: Strengthened Knowledge Development in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. The work aims, among other things, to create a closer link between research, policy and practice.
Forte works to ensure that research contributes to addressing societal challenges in the field, communicates research findings to increase knowledge in society and strengthen the connection between research, policy and practice, and supports the implementation of the priority actions set out in the strategy. This work is primarily carried out within the framework of Forte’s National Research Programme on Mental Health, and research of high relevance to the national strategy is further disseminated through the It’s About Life strategy.
Overall objectives of the national strategy
- Improved mental health across the entire population.
- Fewer lives lost to suicide.
- Reduced avoidable inequalities in mental health.
- Reduced negative consequences resulting from psychiatric conditions.
The strategy also includes seven objectives and priority actions intended to guide efforts towards the vision and overall goals.
