Disability

For many people, living with a disability can mean that conditions for participation and equality in living conditions are impaired. How does the current situation look, and what can be done to change and improve this? Forte has an assignement to coordinate research in the field of disability.

What research is conducted?

Disability research is about the relationship between people with disabilities and their environment. It can include circumstances and events in society that increase disabilities and identifying barriers and solutions for increased participation. Disability research is an interdisciplinary research area where different theoretical perspectives can be included.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities provides guidance

The Swedish national goal for disability policy is to ensure equal living conditions for those living with disabilities.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is to guide Swedish disability policy and the research needed in the area. The Convention regulates the life opportunities that people with disabilities should have, the obstacles that exist and how these obstacles can be solved. It spans all areas of life and ranges from principled positions such as accessibility, equality, participation and self-determination to detailed requirements for how a certain right should be realised.
