International migration and ethnic relations (IMER)
People move across borders for various reasons. 120 million people are refugees from war, conflict and persecution around the world. Others choose to settle in another country to work or study. Forte coordinates research on international migration and ethnic relations (IMER).
What research is conducted?
The IMER research field encompasses research related to international migration and its causes and consequences. It includes, for example, issues on integration, segregation, racism and attitudes, but also questions about migration policy and citizenship.
International agreements provide guidance
Sweden has signed and adheres to several international agreements and conventions on international migration and ethnic relations. These provide guidance for policy and for the research needed in the area. Among other things, the UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees defines who is a refugee and what rights and obligations that person has. The 1954 New York Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons describes assumed rights and benefits for stateless individuals.

What does Forte do in this area?
We open calls for proposals in the IMER area, communicate research and work together with others to ensure that research has an increased impact in society.
Forte is the coordinator of the research area of international migration and ethnic relations
The coordination assignment means that Forte funds research in the area, contributes to creating an overview of the research that is underway in the area and contributes to ensuring that the research results can benefit society.
