The area Social care and social work covers interventions and activities of the social services, the organisation of social services and the development of methods and cooperation with other organisations. Social work in health care settings, schools and other organisations as well as informal care and the role of relatives are included in this area. It also covers research on the interaction between citizens and social service representatives, for example individual and family care, elderly care and childcare.

Research on problems with provision, social child- and youth care, care for people with mental illnesses and various types of addictions as well as care for people with disabilities is covered. The area includes research on the situation for disabled people, for example factors that restrain and promote care. Research about preventative interventions in social care is also included.
